November ushers in a new generation of consoles as Sony releases the PlayStation 5 while Microsoft releases the Xbox Series X and Series S. With both consoles coming out at the same time, each with specifications that fans of both companies will argue is better than the other. The most important part of both systems is the games you will play on them. One game you will be able to play on next-gen consoles is Fortnite.
Fortnite is a worldwide phenomenon which still boasts a huge player base of over 300 million people and remains a game that even non-gamers know the name of. It’s here to stay, and a new generation of consoles would never leave it behind. So what can you expect of Fortnite on PS5 & Xbox Series X? Read on below to find out.
As with any current game being made available on the new consoles, Epic Games has announced that Fortnite will be playable on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles from day one. As players would expect, all current progress and purchases will carry over to new consoles. As you’ll be using the same account, it would be a surprise if progress wasn’t carried over. It will also come with crossplay capabilities across generations, so you can play the game on PS5 with or against those still on the PS4.
On launch, no announcements have been made about what enhancements players will experience from the move to next-gen, however what we do know is that the game will continue to run on Unreal Engine 4. This means players will get enhancements from the system only.
This is just a short-term situation though, because Epic are working on a complete next-gen upgrade to the game that will launch in 2021.
While initially Fortnite will run on Unreal Engine 4 to satisfy player needs to continue accessing the game on their new consoles, Epic have confirmed they are planning to migrate Fortnite to Unreal Engine 5 during 2021.
“Epic will release Fortnite, built with UE4, on next-gen consoles at launch and, in keeping with the team’s commitment to prove out industry-leading features through internal production, migrate the game to UE5 in mid-2021,” the company revealed.
While the game is expected to benefit from the hardware found in Unreal Engine 5, Epic were quick to stress that the game is not a new version, and will still be the game players know and have loved for the last three years.
“This is not a new version of Fortnite. It’s Fortnite optimized to take advantage of the new hardware and features on next-gen consoles,” Epic said. “How will Fortnite take advantage of next-gen console hardware? While we can’t share specifics at the moment, more powerful hardware will allow us to improve performance and visuals.”
I don’t think regular players of the game would want to see vast changes to a game they are so familiar with. However, graphical and technical upgrades are welcome on any game, as we’ve seen in the last generation and its swathe of popular remasters. We expect to see bigger player maps and even bigger live events given the new technology at Epic’s disposal.
Yes, Epic have confirmed that they plan to continue supporting Fortnite on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in tandem with their next-gen console counterparts. With a player base of over 300 million, this isn’t surprising. Not every player will make the transition within the first two years of a new console’s life, so it’s important for Fortnite to remain playable on as many platforms as possible – especially since the game was banned by Apple on their devices.
